An Eye on the Cloud: A Glimpse Into the Future of Business

Editorial

Do you remember the time, not so long ago when you needed 15 floppy disks to install software on your personal computer? Or the shiny CD ROM with Windows 95 that was tagging along with your new desktop? What about the huge data room with servers to reboot just before an important client meeting? Installing software and storing data this way seems antiquated. Now, most of our apps live in the cloud. It would seem insane not to have access to the same working environment and data when you are travelling. Well, say thank you to cloud computing.

According to Hornet Security, 93% of companies have adopted cloud technology within 5 years. This technology is completely changing the way we deploy and maintain applications while using highly efficient and scalable architectures. Pros include flexibility, convenience, costs, and reliability. The biggest concerns raised include privacy and security.

Cloud computing is also a huge enabler for advanced technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and IoT applications. An unusual characteristic of this industry is that often cloud players are at once a provider and key users of the technology (think about the origins o AWS or Alibaba).

In this issue of This Week in Consulting, we explore key applications leveraging the cloud technology, what the different types of cloud are, how cloud security is managed, the various “X as a service” models, how cloud technology is used in high and what the future holds for cloud computing.

Enjoy the read. Feel free to comment. Would love to hear your views.
